People Are Dying From Ebola in Congo: A Pastor’s Desperate Plea to the World

While much of the world continues life as usual, communities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are living under the constant shadow of violence, disease, displacement, and extreme poverty.

In the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri, families are struggling to survive as fears grow over the spread of Ebola in some of the region’s most vulnerable communities.

At the center of this humanitarian crisis is Pastor Rukira Gisunzu Athanase, a community leader based in Goma, North Kivu Province, who is trying to draw international attention to the worsening conditions affecting thousands of families across the region.

Eastern Congo has endured decades of armed conflict, humanitarian instability, mass displacement, and limited access to healthcare infrastructure. Despite these challenges, Pastor Athanase continues supporting vulnerable children and struggling families within his local community.

Local sources describe conditions that continue to deteriorate as many communities face:

  • limited medical access;
  • food insecurity;
  • forced displacement;
  • lack of basic resources;
  • growing public health risks.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly warned that eastern Congo remains one of the world’s most complex and underreported humanitarian emergencies, particularly in areas where violence and disease outbreaks overlap.

“People are living in fear every day. Children are growing up in communities where poverty, disease, and instability have become part of daily life,” local community representatives say.

In Goma and surrounding areas, religious leaders and grassroots organizations are increasingly stepping in to support families affected by conflict and economic hardship, often operating with limited resources and little international attention.

For many families in eastern Congo, survival itself has become a daily struggle.

Somewhere tonight in Goma, a child is going to sleep hungry, afraid, and uncertain about tomorrow.

The world may never know their name.

But perhaps this article can become the reason their story is finally heard.
